Energy Consumption and Physiological Reactions of Treadmill Walking with Functional Electrical Stimulation Using Original Primewalk and Modified Primewalk in Paraplegia

چکیده
The Primewalk is a slide type of medial single hip joint originally designed by Saitoh, and later modified to add hip internal rotation devices. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence on the cardiopulmonary system of paraplegic walking by means of FES while using the original Primewalk and the modified Primewalk. The subject was a 22-year-old male with T12 complete paraplegia who walked on a treadmill using FES with both Primewalks. The walking speed was 1 km/h (equivalent to a comfortable walking speed) and the walking time was 4 minutes. During the walking trial, oxidative energy consumption, step cadence, physiological cost index and blood pressure were measured. There were no significant differences found between the original Primewalk and the modified Primewalk when comparing all parameters. The modified Primewalk was useful for restoring paraplegic walking without any serious cardiopulmonary. Fig 1: Primewalk, a slide type of medial single hip

Comparison of Oxidative Energy Consumption during Walking Using the Walkabout and the Primewalk in Paraplegia
Medially single hip joint knee-ankle-foot orthosis (MSH-KAFO) such as the Walkabout or Primewalk is effective in restoring a stable standing posture in paraplegia. To evaluate the energy consumption of during walking with the Walkabout and the Primewalk, both using the FES system, T12 level complete paraplegic subject participated in this study. We measured oxygen consumption during self-select...
متن کاملStanding stability of the medial linkage KAFOs using functional electrical stimulation in complete paraplegia
A medial linkage device called Primewalk was developed by Saitoh et al. to connect two KneeAnkle-Foot Orthoses (KAFOs). This device enabled to improve for paraplegic gait not only using orthosis but addition to functional electrical stimulation (FES). The purpose is to investigate the postural stability with the Primewalk device liked KAFOs in a paraplegic patient using FES. The complete T8 par...
متن کاملRestoration of Gait Using a New Hybrid-fes Orthosis (primewalk) in a Complete Paraplegic Patient
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the restoration of FES gait using a new medially linked knee ankle foot orthosis (Primewalk) in a paraplegic patient. The walking speeds, the step cadence and the step length at the Primewalk/FES gait were measured and compared with those at the Walkabout/FES gait. All parameters were significantly greater at the Primewalk/FES gait (p < 0.05). The slidi...
متن کاملRating of Perceived Exertion as an Indicator of Exercise Intensity in Paraplegics
Background: Energy expenditure is of paramount importance in the assessment of usefulness of wheelchair for paraplegics. Despite widespread recognition of problems associated with currently available mobility systems for persons with spinal cord injuries, development of more efficient systems has been slow. Lack of a suitable and simple technique for the assessment of energy expenditure in par...
متن کاملComparing the Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation and Functional Exercise Therapy on the Treatment of Ischemic Stroke: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background and Objectives: Stroke is considered as the third common cause of disability and mortality in the world. Therefore, it is important to find a new treatment for increasing the rehabilitation of disability after stroke. The aim of this study was comparing the effect of functional electrical stimulation (FES) and functional exercise therapy (FET) on the treatment of ischemic stroke (IS)...
